The Geneva Centre for Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) developed a Knowledge Hub for Addressing Security and Human Rights Challenges in Complex Environments with the purpose to bring together policy frameworks, guidance documents and tools supporting the work of companies in complex environments. In such circumstances, companies face many challenges around their areas of operations that undermine the safety and security of project implementation and staff while affecting human rights of local communities. Although several policy reforms in the business and human rights’ security sector have been developed in recent years, they are rarely shared between different stakeholders. The web platform aims to collect these good practices in a coherent and accessible structure in order to be used by companies and so to facilitate their responsibility to respect human rights. As both the DCAF and the ICRC are official observers of the Voluntary Principle on Security and Human Rights (VPs) and relevant VPs Implementation Guidance Tools (IGTs), the Knowledge Hub complements this with case studies, toolkits, and more. Although focused on the extractive sector, the guidance and tools are intended to be used by companies in other sectors operating in complex environments which face similar challenges.
